POI Information

(A). W D M Warehouse.  The ex-Tram Depot for the Staple Hill area.  Bristol had a very thriving set of tram routes that operated between 1875 - 1941 & in fact had the first electric trams in the UK, introduced in 1895. The Bristol Tramways Corporation was formed by Sir George White, but later passed into the hands of other operators, at its peak it contained 17 routes & 237 trams.  The network was starting to be run down just prior to WWII, however it was the major Luftwaffe bombing raid in 1941 that dealt the death knell as the main power cables were obliterated.  Despite efforts in the past to create a Supertram system for Bristol, similar in operation to those currently in Manchester, Sheffield & Nottingham, this has come to nought, leaving the city with its ongoing congestion problems.

(B) The Red Lion Pub. OrIginally a C19 Blacksmiths shop, it has been a licensed premises since 1828.  It has a large garden & skittle alley which also serves as a functions area.

(C) Memorial to Fleur Lombard (1974-96). Fleur was the first female firefighter to die on active duty in peacetime in this country, being the victim of a supermarket fire started maliciously by Martin Cody, a security guard on his first day at work.  He did this "through boredom" & was given a jail sentence of  just over seven years, reduced due to psychiatric circustances.  This was criticised, as full psychiatric treatment may have been more appropriate.  Fleur had been a golden recruit, receiving a special award & the Queens Award for Gallantry was posthumously bestowed.

(D) Staple Hill Methodist Church. A very distinctive piece of C19 ecclesiastical architecture.  Information on services & community activities can be found at www.staplehillmethodist.co.uk
